Nick Dempsey is a two-time windsurfing World Champion and Great Britain’s first-ever Olympic windsurfing medalist, taking the bronze at Athens 2004. He bettered this at London 2012, securing the silver medal for Team GB.
Windsurfing Career
Nick Skelton booked his first international success at the 1998 Mistral Youth World Championships where he won the bronze medal. As a senior, his first win was clinched at the North Sea Cup Series in Pevensey Bay, and an additional third place in the Kieler Woche.
He finished 16th at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and four years later in Athens became the first Briton to take a windsurfing medal when he won a bronze.
He continued winning competitions in 2001 and beyond, such as Athens Eurolymp Week, Kieler Woche and the SPA Regatta before finishing third at the 2004 Summer Olympics to take the windsurfing bronze medal.
When switching to the RS:X class he won race after race, resulting in the first spot on the RS:X world rankings. He took the gold medal at the 2006 RS:X European Championships.
London 2012
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Nick Dempsey won the silver medal in the RS:X Class windsurfing class. Dempsey went into the medal race in
second place with no chance of gold. He intended to play safe and did just that, never looking in trouble and finishing third in the race to secure silver. He said bronze would have been a “disaster” and could not even contemplate the agony of fourth again.
