Luís is a former Portuguese footballer who went on to have an outstanding international career.

When he was just 11 Figo joined Sporting Clube de Portugal  and made his debut with the club’s first team at the early age of 16. He earned his first international cap in 1991 and won both the Under-20 World Championships with Portugal and the Under-16 European Championships.

During his career which spanned over a period of 20 years he played as a midfielder for many international clubs. Amongst his accomplishments has been to play for both the Spanish rival clubs FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.  His distinguished career is noteable for several trophy wins including one Portuguese Cup, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, three Spanish Super Cups, one UEFA Champions League title, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, one Intercontinental Cup, four Serie A titles, one Italian Cup and three Italian Super Cups.

The best winger of his generation, his skillful game and team play have brought him global success and fame.

Named amongst the FIFA 100 he was 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year and is arguably one of the great all-time players.

In 2004, Figo announced that he would “take a break” from international football.

He finally retired from football in 2009. He won 127 caps for the Portuguese national football team, a number that makes him the most capped Portuguese player in history.
