Lothar is one of the most highly decorated footballers in the history of the sport.

He set a world football record with 144th international appearances by 2000 and he finished his international career with 150 appearances.

During his long exemplary career Lothar has won many awards including five German league championships  the West German and German cups, the Italian league title and the UEFA Cup twice. Also numerous Footballer of the Year awards and World Soccer Player of the Year for victory in the 1990 World Cup. Awarded the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year he also holds the record for the most World Cup matches played.

Lothar Matthäus is a member of the FIFA 100 – a list of 125 of the greatest living football players chosen by Pelé.

Quoting from his book Yo soy el Diego (I am Diego), Maradona said about Lothar “He is the best rival I’ve ever had. I guess that’s enough to define him”.

He was a versatile and complete footballer, playing in both the midfield and defense. Respected for his fitness and football intelligence Lothar was renowned for his perceptive play with exceptional passing and positional sense, well-timed tackling, and powerful shot.

Since retiring as a player Lothar has been a coach for several teams including Rapid Vienna and Atlético Paranaense and manager of Partizan Belgradeand Bulgaria.
