One of the most naturally gifted racing drivers of all time, John Surtees is the only man to have won World Championships on both two and four wheels.
John Surtees won the 500cc motorcycle World Champion in 1956, 1958, and 1960, before going on to become Formula 1 World Champion in 1964.
In 1955, Surtees was given his first factory sponsored ride aboard the Nortons, supplied to him by the then Norton race chief Joe Craig, and finished the year by beating reigning world champion Duke at Silverstone, and later at Brands Hatch.
At the age of 26, John Surtees made the transition from motorcycles to cars, and made his Formula 1 debut for Lotus at the Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. A motor racing natural, John made an impact straightaway at the 1960 British Grand Prix with a second place finish in just his second Formula 1 race. He then had a pole position in his third race at the 1960 Portuguese Grand Prix.
John has done a lot of work on behalf of the Racing Steps Foundation and acts as an ambassador for them.
From 1970 to 1978, the Surtees Racing Organisation team, founded by John himself, competed as a constructor in Formula 1, Formula 2, and Formula 5000.
In the 1970s, John Surtees ran a Honda car dealership in Edenbridge, Kent, and a motorcycle shop in West Wickham.
John remains passionate about his sport and is involved in single-seater racing cars. He also held the position of chairman of A1 Team Great Britain, in the A1 Grand Prix racing series, from 2005 to 2007.
On the day of his 80th birthday, motorsport book publisher EVRO Publishing announced that in June 2014 it is to publish a photographic memoir by John Surtees, entitled; John Surtees: My Incredible Life on Two and Four Wheels.
