Football player Abby Wambach has been appointed Celebrity Ambassador for New York State apples. Abby will team up with NYAA for an ad campaign, “Abby for Apples,” promoting New York apples and apple products.
A native of Rochester, New York, Abby is starring in television, radio, print and online advertisements for the New York Apple Association (NYAA).
In addition she features on point-of-sale signs for grocery, farm and green markets, on the NYAA’s website and on social media. Abby for Apples is unveiled autumn in conjunction with the 2013 New York apple crop.
“New York soccer moms and players love Abby, and with her local roots and healthy, active lifestyle she is a fantastic apple ambassador for us,” NYAA President Jim Allen said in a statement. “New York state apples, Abby and soccer, that’s just using our heads.”
Wambach recently set the all-time record for goals scored by a women’s soccer player. She broke the record held by another American, Mia Hamm. Wambach now has 160 career goals.
Throughout her career, Wambach has played for the U.S. teams in three World Cups and two Olympics. She has two Olympic gold medals, but has yet to win a World Cup.
When she’s not playing for the national team, Wambach plays for the Western New York Flash in the National Women’s Soccer League.
The Pittsford native said in a statement that she is excited to help promote the state’s apples and apple products.
“Growing up around a family-owned farm and garden store, Wambach Farms, fresh produce was a huge part of my childhood. Whether it was selling homegrown New York apples, or eating them, I learned how important it is to sustain a healthy diet — and as they say, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away,'” Wambach said. “Being a New York native, I am excited to join the New York Apple Association to create more awareness that the best apples in the world come from New York orchards.”
